Prototype Workshop, Integration Lab and interactive showroom in Berlin
Garamantis combines creative design, in-house software development and technical implementation into a seamless end-to-end process. In our Prototype Workshop, Integration Lab and Showroom, we develop, test and demonstrate complex interactive exhibits and integrated showroom systems – from the initial idea through to a fully functional installation.
1. Prototype Workshop – Where ideas take shape
Right next to our studio on the EUREF Campus in Berlin is a space that is central to our work. In the Garamantis Prototype Workshop, we create prototypes, interaction mechanisms and functional exhibits – not just as simulations, but as real, testable systems.
From an idea to a tangible object
Interactive exhibits aren’t created solely on a screen. A mechanical component must feel right. A sensor must respond reliably. A movement must be precise. In our workshop, ideas take shape.
We use 3D printers to produce models and functional components. At our electronics workstations, we integrate microcontrollers, solder SMD components and test circuits using professional measuring equipment. We assemble sensor and motor systems, test them and continue to develop them until they operate reliably and have a long service life.
As well as additive manufacturing processes, we also make a conscious effort to work with traditional materials. We use wood for rapid casing and structural tests, and metal for robust mechanical components. This enables us to realistically assess the feel, stability and visual impact of the materials before an exhibit goes into final production.
Prototypes rather than pipe dreams
Before an exhibit is produced for the first time, it goes through our workshop. There, we test its response times, ergonomics and durability, as well as how the hardware and software work together.
Particularly in the case of technologically complex projects, this process reduces technical and financial uncertainties. This is because key decisions are based not only on renderings, but also on tested functions.
“Having our own in-house development and prototyping capabilities enables us to test ideas in practice at an early stage and refine them in a targeted manner. This ensures speed, technical reliability and a high standard of quality in the final solution.”
Eva Gerth, Head of Prototyping & Workshop Engineering
2. Integration Lab – Where prototypes and components become systems
At the Garamantis Integration Lab, we bring the individual components together to form a fully functional system. In a space covering around 100 square metres, we set up projects in real-world configurations and test whether they work well together.
This involves the precise integration of hardware, software and sensor technology. Displays, LED modules, projectors, network infrastructure, audio systems and industrial control systems – such as robotics components – are assembled, connected and tested in their intended configuration. Only when all components are working together reliably does an interactive system emerge.
Technology has to prove itself
We do not rely on manufacturers’ specifications or data sheets. We test new technologies under real-world conditions. How convincing is a holographic effect actually in a room? How does a monitor behind mirrored glass perform in changing light conditions? How durable are LED films in continuous operation?
We build, test, monitor and evaluate. Only components that prove their worth in practice are used in customer projects. This testing is of crucial importance, particularly when it comes to hardware sourced from around the world. Quality is demonstrated in operation, not in a brochure.
Security through integration
All Garamantis multi-touch tables are integrated and tested here before they are delivered. We set up entire showroom configurations on a trial basis and test the sensors’ response behaviour, whilst validating the software on the hardware that will ultimately be used. Complex configurations comprising interactive systems are run here for the first time as a complete unit.
“We identify potential interface issues at an early stage – not just once we’re on site at the customer’s premises. This reduces risks and ensures reliability.”
Oliver Elias, Founder and CEO, Head of Engineering
3. Garamantis Showroom – Experience interactive systems
The best way to evaluate interactive systems is to experience them for yourself.
The Garamantis showroom features a selection of exhibits from completed projects. Using a multi-touch rotating screen, you can intuitively navigate content with a 360-degree view. Interactive projections respond instantly to your movements and touches. In an interactive display case, objects are not only presented but also embedded in their context. All systems are accessible and can be tried out and tested at length.
The immersive interplay
At the heart of the showroom is a separate, smaller room. In the centre stands a multi-touch scanner table connected to a screen wall. Here, you can experience how light, sound and interaction work together when designed as a single unit.
Impact does not arise from individual elements, but from their coordinated interaction. The showroom demonstrates that the atmosphere alters perception and that interaction governs the flow of information. As the entire space responds to your interaction, you will discover why we develop systems holistically.
A partner who bears overall responsibility
The Prototype Workshop, Integration Lab and Showroom together form our technical development environment. This enables us to develop design, software, hardware, sensor technology, media and building services as an integrated system. Our customers receive a holistically designed, comprehensively tested and sustainable solution – with Garamantis as their central point of contact and the partner responsible for the technical aspects.
